Sampler BBQ Sauce Recipe

Sampler BBQ Sauce Recipe stands out for its three main tastes: sweet, smoky, and spicy. The sweetness comes from brown sugar, honey, and molasses, giving the sauce a pleasant richness. Chipotle, liquid smoke, paprika, and bourbon bring a deep smoky character. Cayenne pepper and black pepper add a gentle spicy kick that grows pleasantly after tasting.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • ½ teaspoon salt adjusted to taste
  • ½ teaspoon chipotle powder or 1 tablespoon adobo sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional for extra heat
  • ½ teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon whiskey

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk or wooden spoon
  • Three Small Bowls or Jars

Method

Step 1
  1. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt to a medium saucepan. Whisk everything together until smooth and well combined.
Step 2
  1. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Stir frequently until the brown sugar dissolves. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
Step 3
  1. Remove the saucepan from the heat and divide the cooked BBQ sauce evenly among three small bowls or jars. Leave enough room in each container for the additional flavor ingredients.
Step 4
  1. Flavor each portion separately. For the Sweet Honey sauce, stir in the honey and molasses. For the Smoky Bourbon sauce, stir in the bourbon whiskey and liquid smoke, then return it to low heat for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring gently. For the Spicy Chipotle sauce, stir in the chipotle powder and cayenne pepper.
Step 5
  1. Let all three sauces cool completely. Transfer them to clean, airtight containers, cover, and refrigerate until ready to use. Stir each sauce before serving if needed.
