Step 1
- Combine the ketchup, tomato paste or tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and cold water in a large saucepan. Whisk everything together until the mixture looks smooth and well combined.

- Mix in the brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, black pepper, and kosher salt. Stir thoroughly until the sugar has dissolved and the spices are evenly blended into the sauce.

- Set the saucepan over medium heat and let the sauce slowly reach a light simmer. Turn the heat down to low and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring often so the sauce cooks evenly and doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
Step 4
- Take the saucepan off the heat and let the BBQ sauce cool to room temperature. Transfer it to clean glass jars or airtight containers, then refrigerate for a few hours before using. Chilling the sauce gives it a richer and more balanced flavor.
