Hog Wild BBQ Sauce Recipe

Hog Wild BBQ Sauce Recipe is a American barbecue sauce featuring ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, spices, garlic, onion, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. It’s a bold homemade sauce I enjoy preparing after years of experimenting in my kitchen. I first became interested in this recipe after watching a barbecue cook prepare a tangy, smoky sauce for grilled meat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 small garlic clove finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons water plus more as needed
  • Hot sauce to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan and whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon
  • Clean glass jar or airtight container

Method

Step 1
  1. Add the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, yellow mustard, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce to a medium saucepan. Whisk everything until smooth and the sugar begins to dissolve.
Step 2
  1. Stir in the minced garlic, minced onion, smoked paprika, black pepper, chili powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. Pour in the hot sauce to suit your preferred heat, then add the water and mix well.
Step 3
  1. Set the saucepan over medium heat and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook uncovered for 12–15 minutes, stirring now and then to prevent sticking. Add a splash of water if the sauce gets too thick.
Step 4
  1. Taste the sauce and adjust the salt, hot sauce, or sweetness as needed. For a smoother texture, strain it through a fine mesh strainer. Let the sauce cool before transferring it to a clean airtight jar.
